The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) is Austrias largest human rights research institute and is associated with the University of Vienna. Its interdisciplinary team conducts basic as well as applied research on a wide variety of human rights topics and is active nationally as well as internationally.

HUMAN RIGHTS RESEARCHER & PROJECT MANAGER (m/f/d)

Full-time 40 hrs, Vienna, hybrid option

We are looking for a Researcher/Project Manager (m/f//d) to join our "Human Dignity and Public Security" team in early 2025 to enhance our work on human rights in the criminal justice context and on the prevention of torture and ill-treatment. The incumbent will be responsible for the EU-financed project IMPACT: Strengthening the impact of national monitoring mechanisms in enhancing the rights of detainees with intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities, starting in March 2025. The project foresees comprehensive research on international standards concerning the rights of detainees with intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities as well as on the work of oversight mechanisms under the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and the UN Convention on Rights of Person with Disabilities.

Tasks

* Comprehensive project-based research on international human rights and the Austrian national level
* Drafting, reviewing and editing of different research outputs, e.g. reports and recommendations
* Project management of EU-funded projects
* Communication and consultation with project partners and project stakeholders
* Organisation of workshops and events
* Presentation of project and research results to stakeholders and/or media representatives
* Development and drafting of project proposals, including for European Commission funding
* Support with other ongoing activities of the Programme Line

Essential requirements

* University degree in law or a related discipline (e.g. political science, sociology, criminology)
* At least two years of relevant experience in the field of human rights
* Good knowledge of human rights, especially the rights of persons deprived of liberty, the prevention of torture and ill-treatment and the work of monitoring mechanisms under the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture
* Strong research and analytical skills
* Experience in project management
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills
* Ability to work independently, diligently, and live up to deadlines
* Good IT skills
* Fluency in English and German

Desirable requirements

* Masters degree in human rights law, humanitarian law or equivalent
* Good knowledge of the Austrian criminal justice system
* Good knowledge of the rights of detainees with intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities, EU law, especially EU judicial cooperation instruments in criminal matters
* Good knowledge of other topics relevant to the work of the Programme Line, including rights of suspected and accused persons in criminal proceedings, migration detention, childrens rights
* Experience in project acquisition, proposal writing and fundraising
* Experience in moderating workshops and giving presentations

Envisaged Start: As soon as possible, ideally 1 February 2025

Duration: Fixed-term contract for 24 months, extension possible subject to project funding

Working hours: 40 hours/week

Minimum salary: 3.626 EUR/month gross

Time plan: The first round of interviews will be conducted online in the week of 13-17 January 2025; the second and final round of interviews will be conducted in the week of 20-24 January 2025, preferably in person.
