Your responsibilities

The Symmetry Probes of Quantum Matter (SPQM) group, led by Veronika Sunko, explores the causes and consequences of symmetry breaking in quantum materials. We develop experimental methods sensitive to broken symmetries, and use them to discover, characterize and manipulate novel phenomena. The core experimental approach in our laboratory is using optics to investigate the symmetry of quantum materials in extreme conditions: at low temperatures, in high magnetic fields, and under mechanical strain. We are seeking a Research Technician who is enthusiastic about hands-on experimental physics and laboratory management. The position will be tailored to the experience and interests of the candidate, but will be centered around maintaining and assuring the overall efficient running of the laboratory. We are looking for a proactive team member to take a lead role in lab organization. This will include the following tasks:

* Maintaining lab inventory and training new lab members
* Writing and maintaining data acquisition and instrument control software
* Maintenance of ultrafast laser systems and cryogenic equipment, as needed
* Assisting group members in the design and construction of custom experimental setups
* Interacting with ISTA's Scientific Service Units (Machine Shop, Nanofabrication Facility)
* Being part of an interactive and international group of students, postdocs, and interns with diverse backgrounds

Your profile

* MSc, or PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field
* Previous experience working in an experimental laboratory in any field
* Experience working with lasers, and familiarity with laser safety practices is desired
* Familiarity with a standard programming language used for instrument control (Python, Matlab)
* Comfortable using or learning to use standard cryogenic systems
* Comfortable using or learning to use 3D computer design software (Inventor, CAD, Solidworks, )
* Highly organized, reliable, and proactive in solving technical problems
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English
* Applications should include letter of motivation, CV, and contact information for 3 referees
